Strategy and tactics work hand in hand, but they mean different things. Many times they are used interchangeably.
Strategy is the overarching plan that defines your long-term goals and the path you’ll take to achieve them. It’s about understanding the big picture—what success looks like and why certain goals matter. Strategy involves setting priorities, allocating resources, and identifying the competitive advantages that will help you succeed.
Tactics, on the other hand, are the specific actions and methods used to execute the strategy. They are the concrete steps that turn the strategic vision into reality. While strategy sets the direction ("what" and "why"), tactics focus on the execution ("how" and "when"). As an example one company that we did work for wanted to launch a new software product. The strategy was to diversify its offerings to increase market share and enter into an opportunity for growth. We worked with them to develop and execute on tactics that included launching a targeted email campaign, expanding their website offerings, and a social media outreach.
A strong strategy ensures that all tactics are aligned toward a common goal, while well-executed tactics drive measurable progress.
